For many years, I never thought that I would be a sports person. As a gay man, the hyper-masculine world of the pitch felt like a place where I didn’t belong—a place where "men like me" weren't supposed to thrive. But four years ago, I decided to change that narrative. I joined my rugby club, the Ottawa Wolves, with zero experience, but with a deep hunger for community.
What I found was more than just a team; I found a Pack that celebrates my identity as much as my effort.
This year, at 40 years old, my journey takes me to Australia for the Bingham Cup. For those who don't know, this tournament is named after Mark Bingham, a hero of Flight 93 and a gay rugby player who challenged every stereotype in the book. To play in this tournament isn’t just about winning games; it’s about visibility. It’s about standing on a global stage and showing the world that our community is strong, resilient, and athletic.
The Bingham Cup in Rome 2024 opened my eyes to the scale of inclusive rugby, but heading to Australia this year feels like a sacred mission. On that pitch, we aren't just playing a game, we are embodying Gay Pride in its most powerful, high-energy, and authentic state.
My heart is as much in the growth of the team as it is on the field. My role as Fundraising Coordinator for the past two years has been driven by this deep sense of Pride. Every dollar we raise helps grow a space where people can be their authentic selves without fear.
In our club, we don't just "tolerate" diversity; we depend on it. Helping this team grow is my way of building a legacy of inclusion that will last long after I’ve played my last match.
Being selected for the Gilbert Champion 2026 program is a true "pinch-me" moment. To have the support of a legendary brand while I represent the LGBTQ+ community on the pitch is a dream come true. It is a testament to how far I have come from that first day at practice.
I am 40 years old. I am gay. I am a rugby player. And as I prepare to take the field in Australia, I have never been more proud of the man I have become, the teammates who stand beside me, and the coach who believed in a "rookie" like me.
